Researchers have investigated the influence of pet ownership on health and lifestyle. They state that the question of whether a patient should own a pet is not as simple as whether the pet has a measurably beneficial or detrimental effect on the owner’s physical health
Conflicts between health interests and pet ownership can cause non-compliance. Research has shown that up to 70 per cent of pet owners would disregard advice to get rid of a pet even though they have allergies. And there are reports of older people avoiding medical care through fear of being admitted to hospital or residential care if this means giving up their pet.
