According to a study in the archives of Internal Medicine, three out of four physicians believe annual exams improve early detection of illness.
Like people, pets can also benefit from routine wellness exams. But with one important difference, according to veterinarian Todd Wihlen “the pet aging process compared to humans is very accelerated, because dogs and cats age so rapidly, significant health changes can occur in a very short amount of time.”
Pets age up to seven times faster, on average, than people do. So while an annual checkup makes sense for humans, it’s too long a wait for pets. Many veterinarians now recommend twice-a-year wellness exams for every dog and cat.
“Twice-a-year wellness exams help the veterinarian to detect, treat and hopefully prevent serious illnesses before they become life-threatening.”
