Deadly bird flu claims another human life: kills an Egyptian girl

Samiha Salem was only 16 years old, she died of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird fly on Monday.

Samiha was from central Egyptian province of Asyut infected with the disease from sick household poultry. A week ago two ducks died and Samiha with positive bird flue symptoms like- high fever along with vomiting and diarrhea admitted to hospital. She died on Monday due to acute pulmonary infection and respiratory failure.

According to state news agency MENA this was the 23rd fatality and 51st case of the disease among humans in Egypt. Since April Samiha’s death is the first bird flu fatality in Egypt since April, and the first of the current winter season. The virus, which first appeared in Egypt in February 2006.

According to  the World Health Organisation (WHO) Egypt has been the worst-hit country outside Asia. Since the virus resurfaced in Asia in 2003, it has killed more than 200 people in a dozen countries.
