When Your Pet Vomits Visit a Vet as Soon as Possible
Determining when a sick pet needs to visit a vet is difficult. If your pet vomits more than once or acts depressed and is not quite herself, a vet should see her as soon as possible, Adviced Sara Thompson an associate veterinarian at City Veterinary Center Uptown in Dallas
Actually there’s no hard-and-fast formula that dictates when you should bring in a vomiting patient for an exam.
Generally, the more frequent the vomiting occurs, the sooner the patient should be seen. But there are numerous exceptions in which a cat or dog may have a serious problem and only vomit occasionally, even as infrequently as once every week or so.
Even if the problem isn’t serious, a vet can prescribe medications to help with the vomiting and hasten her recovery.
Most episodes of vomiting and diarrhea result from gastroenteritis brought on by something such as an infection (stomach bug) or stress (boarding at a kennel) or a parasite (worms). It might also be a result of eating something they were not supposed to eat (a pair of socks). Most of those causes tend to be self-limiting although a round of antibiotics can help quite a bit.
If your pet is throwing up, following are instructions for home care:
• Do not feed her for 12 to 24 hours.
• When you begin to reintroduce food, feed small quantities initially. If she tolerates a small amount well with no vomiting, then work back up to larger amounts.
Soft bland food is best; your vet may prescribe a special diet. Alternatively, you can boil some boneless, skinless chicken breast and some rice.
• When your pet is feeling better, you can gradually reintroduce her regular diet.
