Pet Owners Beware of Slab Fracture, Painful Periodontal Disease

Slab fracture, is a fracture in the tooth. The gum will be very purple at the tooth, and it can cause advanced periodontal disease.

Slab fractures are much more common in dogs than cats, and are usually associated with dogs that eat hard things such as bones.

Cats are more likely to have a lesion — something similar to a cavity in people. It involves the enamel, as well as the root of the tooth.

cats and dogs will continue to eat, even when they have severe – and often painful – tooth disease.

Veterinarians recommend having your pet’s teeth examined at least once a year to check for such things.
