How to Keep Pets Safe and Secure in Halloween

Halloween is really not a fun time for pets, with lots of noise, and strangers around, it can be a scary time rather.

Let us find out some ways to keep your pets safe and secure —

Pets should not be forced to wear costumes. If your pet allows it , make sure there are no hazards that a pet could catch on a fence or door. Never let your pet wear a costume without being supervised by you. Don’t trust the kids. Make sure the pet’s vision isn’t obscured by the costume.

While “trick-or-treating”, don’t take the dog. With all the excitement and activity going on around him, he could become frightened and nip or snap at someone.

Make sure your pets are safely secured away from the front door — perhaps in a back bedroom or family room.

Make sure your pet is wearing ID and license so if he happens to get loose, whoever finds him will be able to return him.

It’s best to bring pets inside (don’t try to keep them in the backyard) until the commotion is over.
Make sure black cats are safely inside, since they are often targeted during Halloween because of their traditional links with witchcraft.

Take your evening walk with the pet earlier so you don’t encounter the hoards of children crazed for sugar.

If noise and commotion excite your dog, put him in a quiet room, turn on the TV or stereo and try not to disturb him until the bedlam dies down. If you can, head off children before they ring your doorbell every five minutes so the dog doesn’t go nuts. Give the pet an extra treat or chew toy to keep him busy.

Avoid chocolates, beware of crinkly papers or other plastic and foil.

Ties and ribbons can become twisted in intestines and kill your pet.

Make sure treats collected by children aren’t left where pets can find them.

Candles are a great part of Halloween, but cat and dog tails can easily swish and knock them over.

Pets can also get tangled in decorations that hang enticingly from a door or a wall. Keep them away from curious paws and jaws.
