TESTS have confirmed that a dead bird discovered last week in Hong Kong was carrying the deadly H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus, the city’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department announced today.

It’s the second confirmed case in the city this winter.

The remains of the bird - a crested goshawk - was found by the department on Shek Kip Mei on January 9.

Hong Kong discovered a dead finch carrying the H5N1 virus at the beginning of the month, which was believed to be the city’s first case this winter.

The department found the dead scaly-breasted munia on Leighton Road in Causeway Bay on December 31.

Tests later confirmed it was carrying the virus, according to the department’s statement on January 8.

On Sunday, staff of the department picked up 72 dead finches around the city, according to Xinhua News Agency.

All of the birds were sent for further tests and staff members cleaned each scene thoroughly.
