The girl became ill with a fever on the March 14 and her condition deteriorated rapidly on March 20 when she was taken to the hospital in Phnom Penh, where she died on Tuesday, according to the statement.
Samples from the girl tested positive for influenza A/H5N1 virus at the Pasteur Institute in Phnom Penh, it announced. The girl was known to have contact with sick and dead chickens and this was the most likely source of exposure. it said.
The H5N1 strain of bird flu remains difficult for humans to catch, but health experts fear it could mutate into a form easily transmitted among people, setting off a human pandemic.
